Knee Pain Treatment in Toms River, NJ
GSMC Toms River Office
Knee pain in Toms River patients ranges from runners and pickleball players with a strained tendon to people whose arthritis has made the stairs at home or a walk on the boardwalk difficult. Our Toms River office brings pain management and sports medicine together, so the evaluation covers both injuries and wear-and-tear arthritis.
Your visit starts with an exam of the knee, a look at how you walk, and a review of X-rays or MRI. Common causes include osteoarthritis, meniscus tears, patellar tendon and kneecap problems, bursitis and pain that lingers after a knee replacement.
Treatment is matched to the cause. It may include physical therapy, bracing and activity changes, corticosteroid or hyaluronic acid (gel) injections, and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) for some tendon and arthritis cases. For long-standing arthritis pain, or pain after a knee replacement, we may discuss genicular nerve radiofrequency ablation, which quiets the nerves that carry pain from the knee. Peripheral nerve stimulation and genicular artery embolization are other options in selected cases.
Some treatments, such as PRP, may not be covered by insurance; staff will tell you the cost before you decide. GSMC's knee care is non-surgical. If your knee needs a surgical opinion, we explain why and help with a referral. Results vary from person to person.

Knee Pain in Toms River, NJ: common questions
Can knee arthritis be treated without surgery?
Often, yes, at least for a period of time. Injections, therapy and nerve ablation are used to reduce pain and keep you moving. Whether and when to consider replacement is a decision we can discuss with you.
Do you treat sports injuries to the knee?
Yes. Sports medicine physician Dr. Thomas Agesen sees patients at the Toms River office.
Is a gel injection the same as a cortisone shot?
No. Cortisone reduces inflammation. Hyaluronic acid gel is meant to lubricate and cushion the arthritic joint. Your provider will explain which fits your knee.
Do you take my insurance?
Garden State Medical Center participates with all Aetna plans, including Aetna HMO, and with many other plans, including auto no-fault/PIP for accident injuries. Some services, such as ketamine infusion therapy, are self-pay. Call 732-202-3000 and our staff can check your coverage before your visit.
