What it is
This is a minimally invasive, image-guided procedure. A varicocele is a group of enlarged veins in the scrotum, similar to a varicose vein. Varicocele embolization closes off the faulty vein from the inside, with no incision near the groin or scrotum, so blood is rerouted through healthy veins and the varicocele shrinks.
Who may be a candidate
This procedure may help:
- Men with scrotal aching or heaviness from a varicocele
- Men with a varicocele found during a fertility evaluation, as advised by their physician
- Men with a varicocele that has returned after earlier treatment
Whether it fits you is decided after a review of your history, exam and imaging.
How it works
You receive local anesthesia with mild sedation. Dr. Gibbens places a thin catheter through a small puncture in a vein at the neck, arm or groin and uses X-ray dye to map the vein. Small coils and sometimes a closing agent are placed to block the faulty vein.
Why choose this option
- Done through a thin catheter, with no large incision
- Guided by live X-ray imaging
- Outpatient care, and most people go home the same day
