What it is
This is a minimally invasive, image-guided procedure. Uterine fibroid embolization (UFE) blocks the blood vessels feeding fibroids, which are noncancerous growths in the uterus. Without their blood supply, fibroids shrink, and symptoms such as heavy bleeding and pelvic pressure often improve. The uterus is kept.
Who may be a candidate
This procedure may help:
- Women with heavy menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain or pressure caused by fibroids
- Women who want to keep their uterus
- Women looking for an option with a shorter recovery
Whether it fits you is decided after a review of your history, exam and imaging.
How it works
You receive sedation and pain medicine. Dr. Gibbens places a thin catheter through a small puncture at the wrist or groin and uses X-ray guidance to reach the uterine arteries on both sides. Tiny particles are released to block the vessels feeding the fibroids.
Why choose this option
- Done through a thin catheter, with no large incision
- Guided by live X-ray imaging
- Outpatient care, and most people go home the same day
- Performed by Dr. Gibbens, board certified in Interventional Radiology and Nuclear Medicine
Recovery
Cramping and pelvic discomfort are common for the first few days and are managed with medicine. Some patients stay overnight for pain control. Most return to normal activity within about one to two weeks.
