Sjögren’s Disease
What it is
Sjögren’s is a disease where the immune system attacks the glands that make tears and saliva. This causes dry eyes and dry mouth. It can also cause joint pain and tiredness.
Common symptoms
- Dry, gritty or burning eyes
- Dry mouth, trouble swallowing dry foods, dental cavities
- Joint pain and fatigue
- Swollen salivary glands
- Dry skin; numbness or tingling in some people
What to expect at GSMC
- First visit: A rheumatologist reviews your symptoms, history and medicines, and examines your joints and skin.
- Tests: Blood tests and imaging, as needed, help confirm the diagnosis.
- Follow-up: Regular visits and lab checks help us adjust treatment over time.
Self-care tips
- Sip water often. Use eye drops and sugar-free gum or lozenges as advised.
- Take your medicines exactly as prescribed. Do not stop them on your own.
- Keep all lab and follow-up visits.
- Stay active with gentle exercise, and rest during flares.
