Osteoarthritis
What it is
Osteoarthritis is the most common kind of arthritis. The cushion at the ends of the bones slowly wears down. Knees, hips, hands and the spine are often affected.
Common symptoms
- Joint pain with activity
- Stiffness after rest
- Swelling
- Reduced flexibility
- Bony enlargement in finger joints
What to expect at GSMC
- At your visit: We ask about your symptoms and examine you.
- Tests: You may need X-rays, an MRI or other tests. Not everyone needs them.
- Your plan: We talk about your options, starting with the simplest steps. We decide together.
Self-care tips
- Keep moving with gentle activity, like walking, biking or water exercise.
- Ice may help swelling. Heat may help stiffness. Use either for 15 to 20 minutes.
- A healthy weight may lower stress on your knees and hips.
- Ask us whether a cane, brace or better shoes may help.
