Degenerative Disc Disease

What causes degenerative disc disease?

Intervertebral discs can deteriorate through normal aging and injury, leading to dehydration, flattening, and a loss of natural cushioning. Just like grapes lose water over time and turn into raisins, your intervertebral discs undergo a similar dehydration process. When these discs degenerate, they lose height, water content, and nutrients, which can result in chronic lower back pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility.

Treating Degenerative Disc Pain

If any of these other treatments have failed to resolve your pain, and you would like to try to avoid surgery, you may be a candidate for VIA Disc. VIA Disc may be able to provide you the long-term results you desire.

About VIA Disc

VIA Disc NP is an allograft used to supplement degenerated intervertebral discs. The allograft consists of dehydrated nucleus pulposus particulate mixed with saline.

The allograft is injected into your intervertebral disc during a quick, out-patient procedure. It will then help supplement the degenerated intervertebral disc, giving it the essential cushioning and support to reduce pain symptoms while delaying further disc degeneration.

Before

Age-related wear and tear of the intervertebral disc can cause loss of hydration and degeneration.

Injection Procedure

VIA Disc NP is delivered into the degenerated intervertebral disc through a small spinal needle.

After

After delivery, VIA Disc NP supports the natural cushioning function and supplements tissue loss in the degenerated intervertebral disc.

What to Expect

The VIA Disc NP procedure is performed in an out-patient surgery center under moderate sedation and usually takes no longer than 45 minutes.

During the procedure, your physician will use fluoroscopy, an x-ray that takes images during the procedure so that the physician can see where the needle is going.

Your physician will inject VIA Disc NP into the center of the intervertebral disc with a small spinal needle. A small bandaid will be placed over the injection site.

Unlike major open surgeries, the VIA Disc procedure is outpatient, with a short recovery time. Patients are able to walk on their own and return home within an hour post-procedure, once the sedation wears off. Many patients may experience pain and soreness after treatment which is expected as the body adjusts to the increased pressure within your intervertebral disc.

While downtime is minimal, it is recommended that you reduce any intense physical activity for up to 72 hours post-treatment. You may be prescribed pain medications to help better manage your pain from the procedure.

You may experience increased pain due to disc pressurization for the first few weeks after the procedure due to disc pressurization. It can take several weeks after the injection for the graft to supplement and repair the damaged disc. Do not get discouraged, as this is common and means the disc treatment has been successful.

Your pain level should return to its baseline a few weeks later as your body recovers. Most patients see the most significant pain relief after 8 weeks. While it may take weeks post-procedure to experience noticeable improvements, VIA Disc provides long-term results and reduces your risk of developing other conditions linked to DDD.

Frequently Asked Questions

Below is a list of FAQs to help you learn more about VIA Disc treatment and benefits.

The VIA Disc injection is an FDA-cleared minimally invasive treatment option that addresses a major root cause of degenerative disc disease (DDD). DDD is primarily a degenerative, age-related damage to spinal discs that causes symptoms of pain, numbness, and tingling worsened by sitting or bending forward. The VIA Disc injection treats this condition by supplementing the degenerated disc to rehydrate them and restore disc height.

VIA Disc may help patients diagnosed with degenerative disc disease DDD by treating the underlying cause of DDD in a minimally invasive way. Here are some of its advantages:

  • Outpatient procedure, typically performed in less than 45 minutes
  • Patients typically resume normal activity within 24 hours with no restrictions
  • Requires no general anesthesia, implants, stitches, steroids or opioids
  • Low complication risk profile and high efficacy profile as demonstrated in clinical studies

No, the VIA Disc procedure is performed in an outpatient setting and does not require general anesthesia. VIA Disc is generally performed with only local anesthetic and light sedation.

VIA Disc is a short outpatient procedure that is typically performed in less than 45 minutes. Patients return home the same day and typically resume normal activity within 24 hours with no restrictions.

The VIA Disc procedure is covered nationwide by Medicare and Medicare Advantage. Commercial coverage and other plans vary. Talk to your doctor to obtain coverage specifics for your plan type.
